Life’s Eternal Questions…
  • When it rains, why don’t sheep shrink?
  • Is there another word for synonym?
  • Why isn’t there mouse-flavored cat food?
  • What social media should I use?!?!

We can’t shed light on many of life’s eternal questions, but we set out to get an answer to the social media quandary that has been plaguing humankind for eons (well, at least the last 15 years or so)

MarketMatch set out  to better understand the social media trends of professionals. We wanted to gauge both the channels used for professional development as well as “just for fun,” in their personal down time.
METHODOLOGY
A survey was emailed to 7,577 bank and credit union executives as well as posted to professional contacts on LinkedIn and Twitter.
34 completed surveys were received.
RESULTS

This is a decisively, inconclusive study … by no means, a scientifically relevant sample. It is merely designed to provide some insight and general direction into what a small sample of executive-level individuals use for social media.
Professional
As expected, respondents tend to use a variety of social media options for professional development, however only 2 stood out when asked which tools they use “the most”Facebook (55.88%) and LinkedIn (47.06%). The next closest response for which tools individuals use most professionally was Twitter at 29.41%.
Most commonly used channels overall:

  • LinkedIn: 67.65%
  • Facebook: 64.71%
  • Twitter: 47.06%
  • Email: 44.12%
  • YouTube: 41.18%
While professionals tend to use fewer social media channels from 9-5, there is no one clear leader. If you’re looking to reach a target at work, a multi-channel approach will be your best option.
Personal

On average people tend to use more different kinds of social media for personal use (4.8) than professional (3.7)
As expected, Facebook is still king with 96.77% of responders using it and 90.32% using it “most often.”
Most commonly used channels overall:

  • Facebook: 96.77%
  • YouTube: 77.42%
  • LinkedIn: 67.74%
  • Pinterest: 48.39%
  • Twitter: 41.94%

If you have budget and time to focus on one social media channel, focus on Facebook as 90.32% of responders use it “most often.” The next closest channel used most often is Intagram at 35.48% and YouTube at 29.03%

We still don’t know all of Life’s Eternal Questions, like:
  • Should vegetarians eat animal crackers?
  • If you choke a Smurf, what color would it turn?
  • When companies ship styrofoam, what do they package it in?

But we do know that Facebook is the best place to reach your audience at work or at home. We know that there are fewer effective “professional” social media channels than “personal” and we know that people use a lot more “fun” social media than work-related.

Maybe this unscientific survey helped justify your current direction. Maybe the results look absolutely absurd to you. Let is know.
