I recently attended a talk by Amita Schmidt, a meditation teacher. In her talk, she read the story of The Daffodil Principle

(Click here to read “The Daffodil Principle”)

In short, the story speaks of a woman’s experience of seeing a five-acre daffodil garden filled with 50,000 bulbs that were planted, one-by-one, over more than 40-years, by ONE WOMAN.

There it was, The Daffodil Principle. For me, that moment was a life-changing experience. I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, more than forty years before, had begun ~ one bulb at a time ~ to bring her vision of beauty and joy to an obscure mountain top. Still, just planting one bulb at a time, year after year, had changed the world. This unknown woman had forever changed the world in which she lived. She had created something of indescribable magnificence, beauty, and inspiration.”

You too can change the world…

It’s about having a vision. Defining how you want to change the world. Determining the steps that need to be taken. Then taking them, one step at a time.

Don’t get overwhelmed or lost in the big picture. A marathon takes roughly 33,000 steps … one at a time. If you focus on the NEXT step, you’ll be fine. If you stand at the starting line, fixated on all 33,000 … you’d never even start the race.

Set a goal and go, go, go!  One bulb at a time … one step at a time.

Amita also told the story of a Buddhist monk who was a passenger with a commercial airline. The plane was experiencing dramatic technical issues and it felt as though it would go down. The monk sat, quiet, poised and calm. The result was that passengers around him, while still worried, also remained calm. Those passengers, in turn, brought calm to their neighbors and so on. The cabin sat, poised and quiet, allowing the crew to focus on the important issues. In the end, the plane landed safely.

This can work at your office and your home.

Begin each day, first considering your intentions. What do you want to cultivate that day? Calm? Compassion? Kindness?  Understanding? Love? Enthusiasm? Confidence?

The vibrations that you emit, positive or negative, will spread across your office. It’s another way of changing the world a little at a time.

What bulbs are you planting? What vibrations are you sending? How will you change the world, one small act at a time?

You can start by sharing these ideas with your coworkers and colleagues.
