I am currently reading Malcolm Gladwell’s “David and Goliath” and it is chock full of stories of underdogs overcoming extreme circumstances to prevail over hardship and turmoil.  From underdog college basketball teams to company executives, the underlying theme…these people all fought the way they knew best: with their strengths.

The way the story of David and Goliath has been passed down leads us to believe that David just had some sort of miracle occur that allowed him to beat the man that was feet taller than him and shielded with armor.  But the fact is David never intended to fight with a sword and shield.  He fought the way he knew how, with a slingshot and rock.  Before Goliath even knew what was happening, he was struck by a rock on the forehead and the rest is history.  (As an aside, the book is fantastic…you should read it!)

What did this story make me think of first?  Community financial institutions of course!

You’re smaller.

You’re more agile.

You are more dialed into the communities you serve.

You have a more personal relationship with your members and customers.

The list of the value you have over the big banks goes on and on!

So why, when it comes to banking services, are you fighting the bigger institutions on their terms? Why do you even try to match their strengths when you are so talented at your own strengths?

Make a list of what differentiates you from these behemoth competitors and center your strategy, marketing, branding, messaging, and experience
around those.  Then you will truly become the “David” of the financial services industry.
