Do you want to get into marketing? Hire a new marketer? Are you just trying to understand your company’s zany marketer?

In business, your accountant needs to be good with numbers, sales at overcoming objections, IT has to speak a language that no one understands (for job security), HR must have a strict adherence to regulation, the CEO … ummm, well, everyone has a clearly defined, comically stereotypical trait.

But Marketing … that crazy marketing department…

They must be:

  • Researchers
  • Statisticians
  • Strategists
  • Politicians
  • Sociologists
  • Poets
  • Master negotiators
  • Salespeople
  • Tech-savvy
  • Risk takers
  • They must be able to create beauty and evoke emotion

But most importantly, above all else, a Marketer needs to be a chameleon. To be able to adapt. To change based on their surroundings. Like a chameleon, adaptation is the Marketer’s survival instinct. Adapt or die.

The most crucial trait for a Marketer to have? Empathy!
The capacity to understand what another person is experiencing from within the other person’s frame of reference.

This afternoon, go buy the largest keg of your favorite coffee you can find, park where you can clearly see your company’s front door, crank-up your favorite jams and get all Starsky and Hutch (or Cagney and Lacey). Do some surveillance.

Do all of your customers look like carbon copies of each other or do you have a variety of ages, races, sexual orientations, political and religious beliefs, economic backgrounds?

Your Marketer needs to identify, communicate and personally connect with each one of them.
